The $50,000 Lunch

Posted by Andy on October 31, 2007

I’ve eaten my fair share of expensive meals over the years. In fact, I watched my daughter eat a $20 hot dog while we were at Disney World earlier this summer. However, on Friday, October 5, 2007, I ate the most expensive lunch of my life.

It started off as a normal Friday. I stopped off that morning to get a cup of coffee and went on about my work day. By the time lunch came, my time was quickly diminishing and I had to pick a place to eat, get my food, and get back to work. I went with the closest place that I knew wouldn’t take much of my time and headed back to work with a plate of chicken and broccoli. When I got back to my desk, I ate my food rather quickly and got back to work. However, it wasn’t very long before I started feeling terrible.

Well before my day was over, I decided to head home early and hope that I would start feeling better. After a little rest at home and something for the pain in my abdomen, I actually felt semi-normal and figured my ordeal was over. Man, was I mistaken…

My ESV Bible Screensaver

Posted by Andy on October 5, 2007

Today, I ran across rsssaver — a screen saver that uses any RSS feed and turns it into a screen saver. As soon as I saw rsssaver, my thought was that I could use the ESV Daily Verse RSS feed and turn it into a screen saver. Each day, a different verse will appear and serve as my screen saver.

rsssaver

Of course, you could use the weekly memory verse, a random verse, the verse of your choiceany of the ESV RSS feeds.

Overdressed: Under Appreciated?

Overdressed

“Don’t blame the writer for the doubts in your head.
Don’t blame the preacher for the lovers in your bed.
When you find out that the world is round, everything is rearranged. You gotta hold up the mirror now and share in the blame.

“Don’t blame the president and don’t blame the king.
Don’t blame your history for what might have been.
We will be free where the grass is green and the lion is tame if we just hold up the mirror now and share in the blame.”

-Derek Webb and Danielle Young on “Share in the Blame” from Caedmon’s Call’s Overdressed

This weekend, I picked up my flyer from Family Christian Stores and found a couple of coupons that I thought I could put to good use. Especially since a couple of new CDs I wanted were on sale for the same price (or less) than I could buy them for on iTunes. So I went and picked up the latest from Wavorly and Caedmon’s Call. Caedmon’s Call is one of my all-time favorite bands and with the return of Derek Webb to their circle, I was reminded why as soon as I pushed play on Overdressed. Musically, lyrically, and spiritually speaking, this CD is simply amazing. My favorites: Expectations, Trouble, Share in the Blame, and There is a Reason.

Sadly, it seems (to me, at least) that this album is under appreciated. Complaints from there being too many members (instruments or voices?) to the suggestion that Derek Webb doesn’t fit in with the band anymore (perhaps due to his new Biblical socio-political focus?) have filled listeners’ reviews of this project. I wonder if these people even remember 1997’s self-titled album or 40 Acres and the sounds those albums gave us or even the words Derek had for us back then?

Either way, I’m thankful for a weekend sale, a coupon, and for a circular piece of plastic on which is contained some moving melodies and words that are sure to end up in the same category as the aforementioned projects from the years past.

Blip #2

Posted by Andy on October 1, 2007

I’m confused as to how/why Amazon placed “The Jesus Storybook Bible” in the Religious Fiction category.
